Why is a building inspection so critical?

Avoid the building crisis effects and protect your family and financial investment.

HPPI uses an innovative proprietary inspection app, specifically developed for the New Zealand building market. This technology-first approach helps investigate hard-to-find defects that you would not be aware of otherwise.

The growing number of building defects in Auckland and Waikato is daunting. Our building inspectors are continually discovering more and more major building defects all the time. This is mainly due to a lack of regulations in the construction industry. Peter Dyer, author of Rottenomics knows the extent of the defected industry only too well. He estimates the cost of leaky home defects in the market is more than $47 Billion.

Peter Dyer, author of Rottenomics

Dyer quotes:

“I remember one builder who said to me, ‘We are hanging onto first world status by our fingertips’. Then he hesitated, and said, “No, by our fingernails”

This is why now more than ever home buyers should get a professional building inspection report before buying. The small amount you pay for a pre-purchase building report could easily save you thousands and in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run.

Check our google reviews for some of our stories:

Awesome company, quick response. “Thanks Katie, you saved us from potentially moving into a house that could have costed thousands of dollars to fix!! Will definitely use you guys again”

If you don’t get the right type of building inspection, major defects could appear later and lead to not just severe financial loss but situations that can affect your livelihood. A pre-purchase building inspection is a widely known must-have when buying or selling a property. Whether it’s an apartment inspection or a house inspection, it’s essential that you protect your family and financial investment.

Very impressed by the quick and friendly communication! The level of detail is also great. 77 pages for a 3 bedroom home. This will serve as a blueprint for future maintenance. Awesome experience. Thanks heaps Katie and the team.

Common building defects we are finding during our inspections

A hidden leak in the roof of a house

Hidden Leaks

There’s nothing more costly than missing an old leak tucked away where no one knows. Even a small drip can create significant damage over the years. Hidden leaks can compromise the integrity of your building structure and when undetected can grow into a dangerous (and costly) hazard.

A close-up of mould and mildew inside a house

Mould & Mildew

Our building inspectors get into the areas where the average viewer can’t – the areas that nasty mould and mildew tend to hang out. Just because mould is not on a visual surface doesn’t mean it can be ignored. Mould clusters tend to release spores into the airflow of a house. When you breathe this air your lung health can deteriorate over time, which is especially dangerous for infants and kids.

Compromised weather tightness on the roof of a house

Compromised Weather Tightness

Even the brightest and most attractive properties can hide ugly issues. Many properties in New Zealand are prone to risky design, which, in the long term, can lead to hidden leaks. Our services will identify if a home is prone to weather-tightness issues, and the warning signs to be aware of before you buy.

Traces of Dangerous Meth use

Second-hand houses can be full of surprises, especially the ones you can’t see. Meth is one of the biggest financial killers in New Zealand homes. Did you know that if a meth test reveals a contamination level above 15ug/100cm2, the property should not be lived in? Yet, without a test being conducted you could move into a contaminated property without even knowing it. Our Meth tests will reveal the invisible truths, which could be a lifesaver when it comes to looking after your families health.

Close-up of Asbestos fibres

Asbestos Problems

As the Ministry of Health puts it, “Asbestos is a proven human carcinogen, and all forms of asbestos can cause cancer. The main way people are exposed to asbestos is by breathing in air that contains asbestos fibres. Asbestos causes cancer in a dose-dependent manner”. Managing or removing Asbestos can also be very costly and could be a powerful negotiating tool before you sign on the dotted line.  Asbestos was widely used in New Zealand from the 1920s to the 1980s and was only banned in 2016. If you have concerns regarding Asbestos, we can test selected materials and provide a laboratory report on the findings.

Highlighting a plumbing issue on a hot water cylinder

Plumbing Issues

We are not plumbers but we know how to spot plumbing problems when we see them. Our inspections provide a visual report of all accessible piping work and hot water cylinders. We’ll find the drips and rust spots that most people miss and warn you if there is any wear and tear that you need to be aware of.

An electrical box outside a house, highlighting electrical concerns

Electrical Concerns

Although we are not electricians, we know dodgy concerns when we see them. Our pre-purchase inspections provide a visual overview of all accessible electrical work. We’ll let you know if spot any warning signs or electrical concerns.
